Denise Bagheri

Director, Programs & Operations

  • With a passion for strategy development and public policy, Denise has over 15 years of experience at local, federal, and provincial governments. She drives change by working collaboratively with colleagues to advance priorities and deliver results. Prior to joining IPON, she worked at the Ontario Public Service where she held various strategic positions across multiple ministries, leading and advising on projects for key government commitments – most recently working on the establishment of IPON. Denise holds a Master of Public Health from Lakehead University and an Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences from Western University.

  • Denise enjoys spending time with her young family, which includes dining at Toronto’s finest establishments, visiting the local playground and watching dance performances by her kids.

Karen Blakey

Director, People, Culture & Talent Engagement

  • Karen is an experienced people & culture leader in the technology industry building and growing high performance teams. Previously at NexJ Systems and Questrade, Karen was responsible for leading the People & Culture team, attracting and retaining top talent, and developing and supporting an inclusive and high performing work culture. Karen is active in the HR tech community and maintains relationships with post-secondary institutions acting as a professor, guest speaker, and mentor for HR and business. Karen holds her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto, a postgraduate certificate in Human Resources Management from George Brown College, and is a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL).

  • Karen likes to stay active and is always on the lookout for somewhere to practice her pull-ups.

Shannon Chakma

Learning Specialist

  • Shannon is a new graduate from the University of Waterloo, where she completed a Bachelor in Science and Business with a focus in technology development and innovation. She has completed a number of diverse co-op experiences ranging from accounting and analysis to product marketing and design. In a recent co-op experience at Geotab, Shannon guided stakeholder interviews, created journey maps based on customer research, standardized data workflows, and drove continuous improvements.

  • Shannon’s daily routine involves yoga and doing the NY Times Mini crossword.

Michael Colucci

Manager, IP

  • Michael is a Canadian and US patent agent with over 20 years in IP, including both private practice and in-house experience. Previously at ABC Technologies, his role ranged from IP administration, analysis and landscaping, to IP management. As the sole IP professional, he was responsible for implementing a value driven IP management system to align IP procurement with core business strategies. Michael brings a passion for client education and engagement.

Andres Cordero

Business Analyst

  • Andres is a bilingual storyteller passionate about uncovering hidden stories with data. With a strong background in business intelligence, data analytics, operations, and strategy, and several years of experience in different sectors, he has been able to connect data insights with business goals. Andres played a key role at one of the top 3 industrial distributors in North America, where his actionable insights contributed to double-digit growth for the Canadian division and significant cost savings for the product development team. Andres holds a Bachelor’s Degree in industrial engineering, an International Business Diploma, and has completed several courses and certifications in data science and analytics.

  • Andres is a die-hard Liverpool FC fan who loves the outdoors and travelling, having visited over 8 countries and 7 provinces in Canada! He also is an advanced student of Muay Thai, loves to swim and run, finishing third place in his first 5K race.

Ugonna Dimeke

Operations Assistant

  • Ugonna has several years of administrative and project coordination experience, supporting executive leadership teams and managing nonprofit initiatives. In his last role as Executive Assistant and Administrative Coordinator at The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria, he managed executive calendars and schedules, organized events and travel logistics for management and partners, as well as managed the membership registration process including due diligence and database updates. Ugonna holds a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from University of Nigeria, in addition to certifications and trainings in project management, procurement and logistics, and management.

  • Ugonna was the best player on his high school soccer team and is a huge fan of Arsenal Football Club.

Niyosha Freydooni

Brand Marketing Advisor

  • Niyosha’s passion for creative thinking and digital strategizing has landed her various roles in social media management and content marketing. Prior to IPON, she worked at tech-first international organizations where she developed an understanding of—and an interest in—the innovation ecosystem. She holds a degree in Advertising and Marketing Communications Management from Sheridan College and has attended UofT Scarborough for Journalism.

Prerana Gaur

Manager, IP Funding

  • Prerana brings nearly a decade of extensive legal experience across India and Canada, specializing in intellectual property law. Her practice encompasses advising clients on strategic approaches to copyright and trademark matters, leading enforcement and prosecution efforts, and drafting, negotiating, and managing a diverse range of commercial agreements. Additionally, Prerana is well-versed in compliance issues, ensuring that clients' business operations adhere to relevant regulations. Throughout her career, she has adeptly managed intricate IP matters from inception to resolution.

    A licensed Barrister & Solicitor with the Law Society of Ontario and a registered Advocate with the Bar Council of India, Prerana is dedicated to ongoing professional development. She has pursued advanced training and certifications in intellectual property law through esteemed programs at the World Intellectual Property Organization, Indian Law Institute and Harvard Law Summer School.

    Prerana’s adeptness extends to navigating billing processes, reflecting her understanding of the legal landscape. Currently, Prerana is an active member of the Copyright Committee at the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), where she contributes to shaping Canadian copyright law based on insights from the IP professional community.

  • Prerana is a reiki healer and spiritual enthusiast with a deep belief in the law of attraction. In her free time, she finds that experimenting with new dishes and creating mandala paintings, which symbolize wholeness and unity, help her maintain a sense of inner peace and balance.

Michael Huynh

General Counsel

  • Michael is an experienced executive leader and bilingual government lawyer. He served as a strategic legal advisor, appeared before tribunals, courts and parliamentary committees, advised on commercial agreements and legislation, built collaborative relationships with federal and provincial ministries, and led multi-disciplinary high-functioning teams. Previously, Michael served as an executive team member of a professional regulator, leading change management initiatives. Before studying law at McGill, he worked in genetics and holds a Bachelor of Science (McGill), Master of Science (UofT), and privacy professional certificate (CIPP/C). He’s served on a variety of boards of directors as well as on Ontario’s innovative, oncology-specialized research ethics board.

  • Michael is a certified tennis coach and loves to help people improve. He’s also an avid player – when indoor courts were shut down in Toronto during the pandemic, he and his pals would shovel snow off outdoor courts (there’s a special technique) and play at below freezing temperatures.

Wenny Jin

Client Success & Program Advisor

  • Wenny is a recent graduate from the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, specializing in Innovation Policy & Environmental Studies. She spent a year working with Council of Canadian Innovators as Policy Analyst where she dove into Canada’s innovation ecosystem and built a clean tech policy library to map the stakeholders and programs. Along with her passion for innovation, she cares deeply about empowering her community. She co-founded Ensemble and produced podcast interviews focusing on intersectional identities during her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto. She also led Master of Global Affairs Student Association (MGASA) during her graduate studies.

  • Wenny enjoys learning about different languages and cultures and often immerses herself in nature and literature.

  • Nahomy is currently completing her Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing Management at the University of Guelph and brings a strong foundation in communications, digital media and data analysis. In her recent role as an Instructional Designer at Hammond Power Solutions, she developed interactive e-learning content and collaborated with marketing teams to align training materials with brand standards. Previously, at the University of Guelph, she led social media campaigns, managed web content and coordinated the Financial Literacy Fair, showcasing her ability to plan and execute large-scale initiatives.  

    Nahomy is bilingual in English and Spanish, AODA-trained and proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and various content management and analytics tools. 

  • Nahomy would happily walk almost anywhere on a warm summer day, especially if friends, iced lattes, and a 20,000-step day come with it.

Mariya Kravchuk

Manager, Client Success

  • Mariya makes it her priority to ensure that IPON celebrates its clients and remains a client-oriented organization as it scales. Prior to joining IPON, Mariya spent 20 years working on the client’s side in the private sector. Mariya loves the culture and the creativity that comes with working at a startup and brings an international outlook to IPON.

    Mariya holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Accounting with German from University of Bristol.

  • Mariya has a passion for learning new languages (currently learning French and Portuguese) and believes that 10,000 steps a day can make all your problems go away.

Christopher Leclerc

Senior Manager, Data & Operations

  • Chris has several years of experience managing multiple projects, client intake resources, and program delivery in the startup space. Most recently, he was the Manager, Venture Studio Program and Client Experience at Accelerator Centre where he successfully designed and launched multiple programs, mapped out processes and delivery guides, and implemented program dashboards and tools to align stakeholders on project deliverables and timelines. Chris also holds a Bachelor of Medical Science in Physiology & Pharmacology and a Masters of Engineering Science in Biomedical Engineering.

  • Chris is an avid traveler who has spent a year living in Australia and has visited every continent except Antarctica. In addition to his love for travel, he enjoys scuba diving and playing golf during the warmer summer months.

Ellen MacKay

Manager, IP Education

  • Ellen has over a decade of experience in intellectual property strategy, education and commercialization. Most recently, she served as Director of Innovation Development at Lakehead University, where she led IP operations, mentored startups and designed accessible, learner-focused education programs for entrepreneurs, researchers and students. Ellen has delivered IP workshops across Canada and internationally, including speaking engagements in Amsterdam, Helsinki, and Dublin. She holds a Master of Education and is a Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP), with active leadership roles in AUTM, UEDA, and Ontario’s innovation ecosystem.

  • Ellen’s love of comic books led to her creating her own graphic novel for her Master’s Thesis, which was all about the multimodality of graphic literacy and its positive impact on children.

Alison Mills

Executive Assistant

  • Alison Mills is an experienced Executive Assistant with 8+ years of expertise supporting leadership teams and Boards of Directors. She excels at managing complex logistics, streamlining systems and enhancing organizational efficiency. Driven by a passion for accessibility and inclusive environments, Alison brings both empathy and precision to her work. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies and French Studies from York University and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Psychology.

  • Alison loves to ride her bike and recently took a five-day solo trip on the Simcoe County Loop Trail, from Barrie with stops in Orillia, Victoria Harbour, Midland and Wasaga. Alison is inspired by Marley Blonsky’s “All Bodies on Bikes” and believes in Health at Every Size (HAES).

Rose Marie Nelson

Manager, Accounts Payable & Payroll

  • Rose Marie is a finance professional with over 20 years of experience working in the private sector (banking, sales and services, manufacturing, transportation, telecommunications, construction) and municipal government. She possesses an array of skills in full cycle accounting and reporting, financial audits, FP&A, payroll, contract management, pension administration and asset management planning.

    Throughout her career, Rose Marie has worked with all levels of management assisting them to successfully deliver on their financial objectives by providing key insights into accounting operations and organization’s financial health. At her most recent role with the City of Mississauga, she led the development of the annual capital budget, played a key role in the drafting of the annual business plan and worked collaboratively with cross functional teams to deliver the annual Infrastructure brochure, prepared PSAB TCA annual reporting, and provided relevant data for Stats Canada, CCPI survey.

    Rose Marie is committed to lifelong learning. She holds an H.B. Com degree (Dean’s Honours list) and a CPA, CGA, designation. She regularly completes continuous professional development trainings and certifications in her field and other areas of interest.

  • Rose Marie likes learning about historical times and different cultures: way of life and traditional food. She also likes working in her garden, reading eBooks and watching historical movies and Columbo TV show.

Cheryl Nicholson

Chief Operating Officer

  • Cheryl has 15+ years of executive experience in managing transformation and growth strategies in Canadian top non-profit, retail, technology, and tourism companies. Cheryl has experience working in startup environments as well as managing large-scale teams and operations. In her most recent role at MaxSold as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Cheryl helped the company achieve aggressive growth targets through the implementation of a reorganization plan that allowed the company to scale effectively.

    Her past experiences across different sectors and organization types allow Cheryl to understand all aspects of a business. She is highly experienced in reporting to Boards, in startup environments, and managing various operations across the technology sector. Cheryl is known professionally for being able to bridge gaps between teams and individuals and create alignment within an organization.

    Cheryl holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Psychology from York University.

  • Cheryl loves to travel! She has been to 50% of the world’s Disney parks.

Lauretha Omotosho

Brand Marketing Advisor

  • Lauretha has 7+ years of experience in brand strategy, digital advertising and integrated marketing. She has led successful campaigns across Google, Meta, and LinkedIn, and is skilled in using tools like Adobe Creative Suite, HubSpot, and Google Analytics. In her previous recent roles, she implemented marketing automation and lead scoring systems that significantly improved campaign performance and conversion rates. Lauretha holds a Master of Digital Experience Innovation from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of Mass Communication from Covenant University, with a focus on public relations and advertising.

  • Once Lauretha hears a song, the lyrics basically download into her brain forever. She may not have a Grammy-worthy singing voice, but if you need the words to a song, she’s your girl.

Paul Paolatto

Interim CEO

  • Paul Paolatto, MBA, ICD.D is veteran corporate executive, restructuring specialist, entrepreneur and governance leader. His most recent roles include serving as; Chief Operating Officer at Western University’s School of Medicine & Dentistry, Chief Executive Officer of Western Research Parks, and WORLDiscoveries, one of the nation’s largest commercialization and technology transfer programs, and the only program of its kind to establish a permanent presence in Asia.

    Paul also led several Western-owned start-up companies across an array of market sectors including environmental technology, data management and medical device development.

    Prior to joining Western, Paul worked extensively in the private sector, successfully revitalizing two software development companies on behalf of its VC-backed owners, and restoring $200MM energy services business that included over 800,000 customers and 2,500 employees across the province of Ontario.

    Paul has also been active in his local community, having served on the Boards of the London Police Services, London Economic Development Corporation, London Small Business Centre, TechAlliance and Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Karan Rakhra

Coordinator Data, Analytics, Research & Operations Co-Op

  • Karanbir is currently pursuing an Honours degree in Environment and Business with a minor in Finance at the University of Waterloo. He brings a solid foundation in research, data analysis, reporting, and process improvement, complemented by experience in both the public and private sectors. Most recently, Karanbir served as a Public Administration Officer with the City of Brampton, where he managed case files, prepared data summaries, and supported policy briefings for councillors.

    Karanbir has also contributed to mission-driven initiatives, including designing evaluation metrics for an affordable housing project through the Propel Impact Consulting Fellowship, integrating financial analysis with social impact assessment. His technical skills include Excel, Power BI, and data validation, and he is recognized for adaptability, attention to detail, and clear communication.

  • Karan and his friends have set a goal to visit all seven world wonders during their twenties, and they’ve already seen two.

Nikki Romano

Senior Manager, PSE Strategy & Innovation

  • Nikki is a passionate changemaker with a strong commitment to helping businesses and industries grow through effective public policy. Nikki's expertise in government relations, combined with her policy development and program design experience, has been instrumental in driving projects for government and public sector agencies. Prior to joining IPON, Nikki worked at the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) where she contributed to the startup of the legal cannabis industry, leading policy and regulatory changes to position Ontario as a leader in the cannabis space. Nikki previously participated in the Ontario Legislature Internship Programme, holds a Master of Arts in Political Science, and an Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Justice Studies.

  • Nikki is a music enthusiast and a classically trained pianist who can make a piano sing, but when it comes to singing herself, she feels better suited playing.

Kristy Smith

Senior Manager, Policy, Government Relations & Partnerships

  • With a passion for technology, innovation and public policy, Kristy has held positions at several international organizations and non-profits advising on effective communications outputs and policy positions. Prior to joining IPON, she completed a research fellowship with Global Affairs Canada where she studied and advised on issues related to technology security including IP and research. Kristy holds a Master of International Public Policy from the Balsillie School of International Affairs, a Bachelor of Arts from Western University, and a post-graduate certificate in Communications and Public Relations from Fanshaw College.

  • Despite living in a landlocked city, Kristy has always been obsessed with oceans which has led her to free diving remote atolls, scuba diving underwater museums and running into a few wild sharks, sea turtles and dolphins along the way.

Kiran Sohi

Digital Operations Manager

  • Kiran brings a diverse background in market strategy, digital product management, data science (AI/ML), consulting, strategic planning and team leadership. Kiran has worked with both startups and Fortune 500 companies in hands-on and strategic roles. Most recently at Sustainalytics, acquired by Morningstar, Kiran’s team developed and implemented a flagship product to significantly increase the volume of ESG Risk Ratings for global companies while also reducing operating costs using AI/ML architecture solution design. Kiran holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and Engineering, an MBA, and a Certificate of Data Science.

  • I love spending time creating Art in my spare time, primarily landscapes and abstract paintings. Occasionally I dabble in digital medium as well.

Tracy Statema

Program Lead

  • Tracy has a passion for organization which has served her well over an extensive career in administration and events. Her experience includes not-for-profit, financial and business services. Her previous roles include Right Management, Canadian Youth Business Foundation and N.A.B.S. At IPON, she gets to work with all facets of the organization including finance, HR and services. Tracy holds a diploma in Public Relations from Humber College.

  • Tracy is passionate about animals and in particular rhino conservation. This has resulted in two trips (so far) to Africa to photograph and learn more about these amazing, endangered creatures.

Roula Thomas

Vice President, Intellectual Property

  • Roula Thomas has been practicing IP law for over 25 years as a Registered Canadian and US Patent Agent. Since 1999, Roula has worked in IP in the area of Biotechnology and the Life Sciences in private practice at leading multi-national law firms advising and supporting the IP portfolios of a large R&D organization, academic institutions and the Government of Canada. Since 2016, Roula has been a senior member of the National Research Council's (NRC) in-house IP Team and then as Leader of NRC’s IP Team, overseeing NRC's extensive IP Portfolio across 13 Research Centres. While at NRC, Roula was also the Director of the IP Assist Program at the NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program where she developed, deployed and successfully led a national program aimed at supporting high growth SMEs with IP. Under Roula's leadership, IP Assist was optimized to deliver IP Education and Support Services to high growth innovative firms. As a leader within Canada's IP ecosystem and an experienced IP practitioner, Roula was able to effectively work with government and industry partners to establish effective IP frameworks to enable positive outcomes and impact for innovative Canadian firms through their IP. In addition to being an active speaker on IP related matters, Roula is known professionally as a bridge-builder and people-inspirer. Roula's energy and care for her teams is clearly displayed in her leadership style - lead by example, understand the gaps and mobilize an aligned team that moves forward with purpose.

  • Roula is a mother of four, loves to run (and not because of the kids), is a regular guest speaker at large community events, has been a local TV host and remains a champion of supporting community initiatives (especially when they are outdoors).

Alena Voloboeva

Controller

  • Alena Voloboeva, CPA, CGA, ACCA is a seasoned finance leader with over 15 years of experience across both public and private sectors, specializing in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance. She has a proven track record of leading complex financial operations in multi-entity and public sector environments, with a strong focus on transparency, accountability, and results. Her area of expertise is designing and implementing accounting systems tailored to unique needs of startups.

    Alena is highly skilled in driving operational efficiency, strengthening financial governance, and enabling data-driven decision-making through close collaboration with cross-functional and executive teams. She brings deep expertise in Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAB), IFRS, internal controls, audit coordination, and tax compliance, making her a trusted partner in both strategic planning and day-to-day financial management.

  • Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in nature — exploring forest trails, discovering hidden waterfalls, and enjoying the tranquility of lakes. Whether hiking through the woods or capturing scenic views, I find that time outdoors recharges my energy and brings clarity to my thinking.

  • William spent the last couple of years at Accelerator Centre (AC) as Program & Client Experience Coordinator where he experienced both sides of the AC’s ecosystem to support a portfolio of clients. As the first point of contact for several programs, he is focused on improving access to relevant offerings, meeting and networking with potential clients, and providing an informed, responsive, empathetic and innovative approach to the client experience. During this time, Will contributed to the development of new programming, building an application intake form, reviewing applicant eligibility, and assisting tech-centred clients in navigating the application and onboarding process. Will brings his passion for client success and the innovation ecosystem in addition to his commitment to contributing to a positive workplace culture through social and workplace events. Will holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Wilfrid Laurier University.
