Our Mandate
The Government of Ontario created Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) to provide intellectual property (IP) supports and services to help businesses and researchers innovate and grow.
An important part of IPON’s mandate is to support the development and protection of IP and improve the commercialization outcomes of research and new inventions in Ontario which will help advance our province’s economic growth and competitiveness. The agency’s launch marks a critical step forward in developing Ontario’s IP landscape and will help advance Ontarians’ abilities to compete in the knowledge-based economy, and support job creation to build a stronger and more competitive province. IPON’s objects are set out in more detail in Ontario Regulation 4/22.
Supporting Innovation Within Ontario’s Postsecondary Sector
On January 14, 2022, the Ontario government introduced the Commercialization Mandate Policy Framework (CMPF), to help publicly assisted colleges and universities move towards the shared goal of ensuring that “made-in-Ontario” research and innovation benefits Ontarians.
As part of this initiative, IPON reviewed the Annual Commercialization Plans (ACP) submitted by 23 colleges and 19 universities within Ontario and has submitted a report to the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities summarizing the sector’s overall progress. In this report, IPON provides key observations and recommendations to improve innovation and commercialization at the postsecondary level.

In support of the CMPF, on April 20, 2023, Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) announced that it will be providing $2 million in funding for seven projects proposed by ten postsecondary institutions across the province to enhance commercialization efforts and drive economic growth. Additionally, IPON is leading a joint working group with several postsecondary leaders to identify a common set of commercialization metrics and reporting standards to be included in future ACPs.
